Venetian vedutism: a new vision

racco Foundation was official sponsor of the exhibition “Venice, Canaletto and his rivals”, organised at the Washington National Gallery of Art from February 20th to May 30th 2011, which presented to the American public 20 paintings by Canaletto and 33 by his most important contemporaries, including Gaspare Vanvitelli, Luca Carlevarijs, Michele Marieschi, Bernardo Bellotto and Francesco Guardi.
The exhibition was one of the major cultural events in Washington in the year of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian unification, with more than 100,000 visitors in the three months it was open.When the Washington exhibition closed, a seminar was organised in Milan at the Pinacoteca di Brera, in collaboration with the Associazione Amici di Brera, entitled “Venetian vedutism: a new vision”. It reflected on the cultural and scientific heritage of this great period of Venetian painting, which highlighted the indissoluble link between art and science.
