Press Conference Presentation: “Art from Inside. Masterpieces Unveiled Between Art and Science”

On Wednesday, October 8 2025, in Milan at Palazzo Reale, the press conference was held to introduce the exhibition Art from Inside. Masterpieces Unveiled Between Art and Science, promoted by Comune di Milano-Cultura and produced by Palazzo Reale and Fondazione Bracco, in collaboration with 24 ORE Cultura-Gruppo 24 ORE.

Thanks to the most advanced non-invasive imaging diagnostic techniques and 1:1 scale reproductions, the exhibition reveals the secret layers of extraordinary works from the fifteenth to the eighteenth century, exposing reworkings, compositional changes, changes in patronage, and the hidden choices made by the artists.

Great masters such as Beato Angelico, Piero della Francesca, and Caravaggio, to name but a few, are explored from a new perspective that considers what is – only apparently – invisible. Each painting thus becomes a story to be read in depth: a multimedia and immersive narrative that demonstrates how science can “take care” of art.

The press conference, hosted in the magnificent Sala Otto Colonne of Palazzo Reale, was opened by the Councillor for Culture of the City of Milan, Tommaso Sacchi, the Director of Culture and Director of Palazzo Reale, Domenico Piraina, and Diana Bracco, President of Fondazione Bracco. Bracco emphasised how diagnostic technologies developed for the care of the human body – a field in which Bracco is a world leader – can become valuable investigative tools for “taking care” of works of art, revealing their hidden soul and contributing to their restoration and conservation. This vision is the origin of the project: a dialogue between science, art, and technology capable of generating new knowledge.

The narrative of the exhibition was then entrusted to the project's scientific consultants: Isabella Castiglioni, who highlighted how imaging diagnostics allows for in-depth exploration of works, bringing to light hidden layers, original materials, and even the artist’s rethinking; and Stefano Zuffi, who drew attention to the tangible, material dimension of the artwork. Finally, Marco Malagodi, Scientific Director of the Arvedi Laboratory for Non-Invasive Diagnostics for Historical Musical Instruments at the Museo del Violino in Cremona, recounted the emblematic case of the small "Bracco" violin by Lorenzo Storioni, a bearer of precious information about the performance techniques of the period.

The exhibition “Art from Inside. Masterpieces Unveiled Between Art and Science” is open from October 9, 2025, to January 6, 2026, at Palazzo Reale in Milan. Admission is free.
